Determining a linear drive with racks and pinions

Defining a linear drive with racks and pinions is not always easy due to the many variables. For example, the rack must be able to supply the feeding force and be accurate enough. The gearbox is an important component between the pinion and the motor and the motor itself must provide an appropriate rated and maximum torque at a given speed. Eric Megens tells more about it in this video.

The rack

First, the rack. It must be able to deliver the feed force and be accurate enough for the appication. The pinion rolls in this rack which transforms the torque into the feed force. Empirically, around 20 teeth is the most optimal teeth-number for a pinion. It is the optimum between backlash on the one hand and wear on the other

The gearbox and the motor

The gearbox is the component between the pinion and the motor and provides the reduction on the motor speed, a proportional increase of the torque and, important, a better mass inertia ratio. Finally, the motor which delivers a suitable nominal and maximum torque at a give speed.

We are more than happy to calculate the drive for you, in that way we come up with a complete proposal, possible including a fully automatic lubrication unit. We can also calculate what the accuracy of the whole system, based on the selected components, is going to be. In addition to our unique products, our knowledge will contribute to your success and progress.
